Nintendo Says It Has No Current Plans to Drop Physical Games
Nintendo has no current plans to stop releasing physical games, a senior regional executive said, as Sony’s planned end to PlayStation disc production in 2028 raises questions about the future of game collections and resale. Bill van Zyll, Nintendo’s vice president and general manager for Latin America, said the company considers consumer preferences and that its Switch 2 console supports both physical and digital games. In an interview with YouTube creator Coelho no Japão, van Zyll described Nintendo’s approach as responsive to what players want. The Switch 2 had launched just over a year before the interview, he noted, and he said the company had no plans to abandon physical releases. His remarks describe Nintendo’s current position, not a long-term commitment, and were made in his role overseeing Latin America. The interview came amid attention to Sony’s plan to stop producing PlayStation discs in 2028. That decision has prompted questions about whether other console makers might move toward digital-only distribution. The reports provided no comparable policy announcement from Nintendo as a whole.
