Sony brings QSSR upscaling to standard PS5

Published 1 October 2026

Sony has made Quick Spectral Super Resolution, a streamlined image-upscaling technology, available for the standard PlayStation 5, bringing a version of its PS5 Pro graphics approach to the base console. The feature is initially supported in Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei, which received updates adding QSSR on October 1, according to Sony’s announcement. QSSR is designed to reconstruct images with added detail and stability while operating within the standard PS5’s hardware limits. It is distinct from PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution, or PSSR, which remains the higher-end upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. Sony has said the standard console’s computational constraints made it impractical to use the Pro’s implementation directly, prompting development of a more streamlined option. The two games’ developers described improvements in their titles. Mike Fitzgerald, head of technology at Insomniac Games, said QSSR adds pixel-level clarity and stability in Marvel’s Wolverine. Jasmin Patry, lead rendering engineer at Sucker Punch Productions, said it improves fine detail and temporal stability in Ghost of Yōtei.
