Leaker Claims PS6 and Helix Chips Have Taped Out

A leaker says chips for Sony’s next PlayStation, known as the PS6, and Microsoft’s Project Helix have been taped out, and estimates the systems at 40 and 56 TFLOPS, respectively. Neither company has confirmed the reported chip status or performance figures, which remain unverified claims attributed to hardware leaker KeplerL2. Tape-out generally refers to a chip design being finalized for submission to manufacturing. If the reported status is accurate, it would indicate that the designs have reached an important development stage, but it does not establish when either console will be released or what its final specifications will be. The reported figures suggest Project Helix would have higher theoretical floating-point throughput than the PS6. However, TFLOPS alone do not determine how games perform. Architecture, memory bandwidth, software and other capabilities can affect results, making direct comparisons difficult. KeplerL2 has also said the PS6 estimate accounts for dual-issue compute, a feature that complicates comparisons with the PlayStation 5’s figures.
