Sony Opens Japan PS5 Pro Applications With 60-Hour Rule

Sony has opened applications in Japan for a purchase opportunity to buy a PlayStation 5 Pro, requiring applicants to have logged at least 60 hours of PlayStation gameplay during a two-year qualifying period. If eligible applications exceed the number of consoles available, Sony says it will select buyers by lottery. Applicants must use a Sony account registered in Japan and associated with at least 60 hours of PS4 or PS5 play between September 27, 2024, and September 27, 2026. The hours must be recorded on the account used to apply. Meeting the threshold qualifies a person to apply but does not guarantee a console. Applications are scheduled to close on October 7. Sony says it will begin notifying selected applicants on October 26 if a lottery is needed. Those selected can purchase the console for 137,980 yen. Sony has not disclosed how many units are available, so the number of applicants and the likelihood of selection are unknown. The requirements restrict access to people with an established PlayStation account and qualifying gameplay history.
