Sony Transfers 43 VR Patents to Meta
Sony has transferred 43 U.S. patents covering virtual, augmented and mixed reality technologies to Meta, while a broader agreement provides for the transfer of 419 patents worldwide. The U.S. transfers took place between June and September 2026, according to reports citing patent records and a December 2025 agreement between the companies. The 419 patents include 180 filed in the United States and 239 filed elsewhere, including in Japan, China, Korea and Europe. The reported transfer of 43 U.S. patents is a completed step; the agreement describes the broader global transfer, but the available information does not establish that all 419 patents have changed hands. The patents relate to technologies including head-mounted displays and extended-reality systems. Sony filed them between 2010 and 2022, spanning the development of its PlayStation VR and PlayStation VR2 headsets. Meta is acquiring the intellectual property as it continues work in virtual and mixed reality hardware. The transaction has prompted speculation that Sony is retreating from consumer VR, but it does not confirm that the company has ended PlayStation VR2 support or ruled out a successor.
