Rockstar says GTA 6 work could speed future games

Published 14 October 2026

Rockstar Games executives say the engine, tools and team developed for Grand Theft Auto 6 should help the studio make future games more quickly, though they have not set a schedule for the next project or shown that development times will shorten. Technical director Phil Hooker said the work on the upcoming game had built a foundation that Rockstar could use for future projects. He said he was confident the studio could build on it and create more content without having to expand in the same way. Co-head and art director Aaron Garbut said Rockstar had changed foundational elements during development and would retain that work rather than dismantling it. The statements describe an expectation, not a confirmed release timetable. The executives did not identify which game would come next or say when it might be completed. Grand Theft Auto 6 is scheduled to launch November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, according to the reports. The sources do not establish that it has launched. Rockstar’s development lead, Rob Nelson, described how the studio’s previous major release affected work on Grand Theft Auto 6.
