Nine dead in Erie shooting, governor says
A shooting in Erie, Pennsylvania, left nine people dead Friday, including the suspected shooter, Gov. Josh Shapiro said Saturday. Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah said the suspect was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound and that there was no ongoing threat to the public. Police were called to the 700 block of Perry Street shortly before 5 p.m. after reports of gunfire. Witnesses told officers a man had shot two women outside and entered a nearby home, Lorah said. The women were found dead outside the residence, and officers later found additional victims inside. Police surrounded the home, and a SWAT team took part in the response. Officers entered the property after the suspect was found dead, according to accounts of the police response. The nine-person toll, reported by Shapiro, includes the suspect; reports said two children were among those killed. Authorities had not publicly released the victims’ identities. The accounts of the shooting’s sequence describe a gunman entering the home after the women were shot. Police have not established whether the suspect knew the victims or what led to the attack.
