12 wounded in shooting at Macon park birthday gathering

Twelve people ages 17 to 19 were wounded in gunfire at Carolyn Crayton Park in Macon, Georgia, shortly after midnight on September 27, Bibb County Sheriff David Davis said. Two were in critical condition and the other 10 were reported stable. The sheriff said two groups exchanged gunfire after a confrontation at the park, where a gathering for a woman’s 18th birthday had moved earlier in the night. Davis said the birthday group went to the park after being told to leave a home rented for the celebration. Another group arrived, and the groups exchanged words before people displayed firearms and began shooting at one another, he said. The accounts provided do not establish what prompted the confrontation or how the groups were connected. The wounded included five 17-year-old males, five 18-year-old males, one 19-year-old male and two 18-year-old females, according to the sheriff’s account. The injured were taken to a nearby hospital in private vehicles. Davis said investigators had no indication that the wounded had participated in the gunfire.
