Police shoot man outside Stockholm’s Royal Palace

Published 7 October 2026

Swedish police shot a man outside Stockholm’s Royal Palace on Tuesday evening, October 6, and took him to hospital, where his injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening. Police said there was no danger to the public and that their operation was ongoing. Police said officers responded to reports of a man behaving aggressively with a weapon and fired live ammunition, hitting him. The royal court confirmed that he had behaved threateningly while carrying a knife. A police spokeswoman did not specify the weapon involved, while media accounts also identified it as a knife. The incident took place at Lejonbacken, the northern approach to the palace in Stockholm’s Old Town. The man was taken into custody and transported to hospital by ambulance, according to the reports. Police did not provide further details about his condition beyond saying his injuries were serious but not life-threatening. The royal court told a newspaper that the man had behaved threateningly while carrying a knife. Separate media reports said he approached palace guards and asked or told them to shoot him; that account was not independently established in the supplied police statements.
