NYPD Names Two Suspects in Bronx Detective Stabbing
New York City police identified two men as suspects in the stabbing and attempted robbery of off-duty NYPD Detective Jose Mercedes in the Bronx on October 2. Mercedes was released from the hospital on Monday, October 5, while the suspects remained at large in reports published the following day. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch named D’Angelo Caraballo, 25, and Sneider Mejia, 24, as the suspects at an October 6 briefing. Police say the men attacked Mercedes as he was near his car and attempted to rob him. Accounts differ on whether they arrived on a moped or an electric bicycle and whether they took his chain or attempted to snatch it. Mercedes was stabbed multiple times and taken to Jacobi Medical Center for treatment. Tisch said Mercedes was released after several days in the hospital. He walked out of the medical center on Monday evening, according to her statement, as fellow officers gathered to greet him. Police have asked anyone with information about the suspects’ whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers.
