Off-Duty ICE Agent in Custody After Fresno Shooting

Published 10 October 2026

An off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent is in custody on felony assault charges after being shot once by a 72-year-old man in Fresno, California, police said. The man who fired the shot is not facing charges, according to authorities. Fresno police said the encounter began early Friday, October 9, when a woman found 32-year-old David Gonzalez asleep on her lawn. She told her father, who went outside and told Gonzalez to leave. Police said Gonzalez appeared intoxicated and agitated after he woke, then allegedly assaulted the father. The daughter tried to intervene and was also allegedly attacked, police said. The father told police he feared for his and his daughter’s safety and fired one shot at Gonzalez, striking him in the midsection. An off-duty police officer who is the daughter’s boyfriend arrived and handcuffed Gonzalez, according to authorities. Gonzalez was taken to a hospital, where police reported he was in serious condition. The father’s injuries were still being evaluated in reports describing the incident. Police said the father legally possessed the firearm and was not facing criminal charges.
