Bryant bans Drumcree parade after police review request

Published 9 October 2026

Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant has banned the Drumcree Orange Order parade along Garvaghy Road in Portadown, overturning an earlier Parades Commission permission after the police chief asked him to review it. Bryant announced the decision on October 9, following a 13-day standoff involving the proposed procession and protests along the route. The Parades Commission had allowed 35 members of the Portadown District Loyal Orange Lodge to walk the road on September 27, 2026. The parade did not take place on that date, and the dispute continued. Chief Constable Jon Boutcher made a formal request under Section 9 of the Public Processions (Northern Ireland) Act 1998. Bryant said he reviewed the original determination, consulted Boutcher and the Parades Commission, and concluded that circumstances had changed. He said the procession could not proceed as previously permitted. Boutcher said police had exhausted lawful and proportionate options to facilitate the procession. In his assessment, any remaining option would require a substantial public-order operation and carry an unacceptable risk of serious injury and disorder.
