Google updates Play Store and YouTube for cars
Google is rolling out a redesigned Play Store and new entertainment features to vehicles with Google built-in, including YouTube playback that can continue as audio after a car shifts into drive. The update is expected to reach eligible vehicles gradually over the coming weeks, the company says. The revised Play Store will adapt its layout to a vehicle’s display size and orientation. Google says the storefront will highlight apps and curated collections, provide more details to help users browse, and allow downloads with one tap. Navigation options will also be arranged to suit horizontal or vertical screens. Google says STARZ, Firefox, Ludo King and JioHotstar are joining the in-car app lineup. The apps will be available for use while vehicles are parked. The company says compatible vehicles already have access to more than 700 apps, and the redesigned store is intended to make discovery easier. The update also changes how YouTube works in the car. Occupants will be able to watch videos while parked; when the vehicle shifts into drive, playback can continue as audio without video on the dashboard. Google says the feature requires a YouTube Premium subscription.
