Xbox Rolls Out Disc-to-Digital Feature to All Users

Xbox has begun making its disc-to-digital feature available to all Xbox One and Xbox Series X users who have installed the latest system update, allowing eligible physical games to receive a digital license. The rollout follows a period of testing with Xbox Insiders and applies to games from those two console generations, not original Xbox or Xbox 360 discs. To use the feature, a player inserts a qualifying game disc into the console and claims its digital license, either through an on-screen prompt or the game’s menu. Once claimed, the game can be played on that console without the disc inserted for authentication. Xbox has also said the feature works with most physical games across the supported generations, but not every title is eligible. The license remains tied to the disc used to obtain it. Xbox’s support guidance says access may be limited or revoked if the owner loses, sells, gives away or otherwise no longer possesses the qualifying disc. If someone else uses that disc to claim a license, the original user may lose the associated access. The feature therefore does not convert a physical game into a license that can be kept independently of the disc.
