Whalefall Sets October 16 U.S. Theater Opening

Published 15 October 2026

Whalefall, a survival thriller starring Austin Abrams as a diver trapped inside a sperm whale, is scheduled to open in U.S. theaters October 16, 2026. The film, directed by Brian Duffield and adapted from Daniel Kraus’s novel, pairs its high-concept predicament with a story about grief and a strained father-son relationship. Abrams plays Jay Gardiner, who enters the ocean seeking the remains of his late father, Mitt, played by Josh Brolin. A squid draws Jay into the path of a feeding sperm whale, and he becomes trapped inside the animal. Reviews describe the film’s central challenge as Jay trying to find a way out while facing physical danger and a dwindling supply of oxygen. The story moves between Jay’s ordeal and memories of his relationship with Mitt. The father, a seasoned diver, had a difficult bond with his son, and the memories reveal both the lessons Mitt taught Jay about the sea and the emotional strain between them. Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd also appear in the cast. Duffield has said the relationship needed to feel recognizable before the extraordinary whale scenario began.
