The Social Reckoning Opens in U.S. Theaters
Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning opened in U.S. theaters on October 9, bringing his return to the world of Facebook into a story centered on whistleblower Frances Haugen and the company’s handling of the platform’s effects. Mikey Madison plays Haugen, while Jeremy Strong portrays Mark Zuckerberg and Jeremy Allen White plays Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz. The film runs 112 minutes, according to its release listing. The drama follows Haugen’s path from Facebook employee to whistleblower and the reporting effort with Horwitz that brought internal company documents to public attention in 2021. Sorkin wrote and directed the film, which is presented as a companion to The Social Network rather than a direct continuation of that film’s focus on Facebook’s founding. Zuckerberg is a supporting character in the new story, with Haugen as its protagonist. Sorkin said Haugen told him a friend had become radicalized after spending too much time on Facebook. He said that account helped him find the opening scene for the film. The film’s dramatization, including its treatment of Haugen’s experiences and Facebook’s conduct, is not independent evidence of the underlying events.
