Trump Calls for New Ukrainian President as UK Seeks Unity

Published 11 October 2026

Donald Trump called for Ukraine to get a new president who could make a deal, prompting UK officials to say they would work to repair relations between Washington and Kyiv and continue supporting Ukraine. The remarks followed a public dispute over a US-Russia arrangement involving Russian diesel and eased restrictions on exports. Trump said Ukraine should choose a new leader after criticizing President Volodymyr Zelensky’s objections to the diesel arrangement and Ukraine’s attacks on Russian refineries. The reports describe the arrangement as involving Russian diesel and the easing or suspension of export restrictions. One account said the suspension would run until April. Its total volume and full terms were not specified consistently. Wes Streeting, the UK defence secretary, said Britain’s role was to bring its allies back together. He said the UK stood with Zelensky and that the choice of Ukraine’s leader belonged to Ukrainians. Elections have been suspended under martial law since Russia’s 2022 invasion. Streeting also said the UK would maintain economic pressure on Russia and continue supporting Ukraine’s military efforts.
