Samsung and Apple Launch Rival Foldable Phones

Samsung and Apple have launched foldable smartphones within days of each other, opening a direct contest in a market Samsung has dominated since 2019. Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z Fold8, Z Flip8 and Z Fold8 Ultra, while Apple announced its first foldable, the iPhone Duo, under new CEO John Ternus, who succeeded Tim Cook on September 1. The two devices differ in several key specifications. The Galaxy Z Fold8 weighs 201 grams and folds to 9.7mm thick, while the iPhone Duo weighs 254 grams and is 11.3mm folded. The iPhone Duo, however, carries an IP68 rating for dust and water resistance, compared with the IP48 rating on Samsung's foldable, which leaves it vulnerable to particles smaller than 1mm.
