Apple's Reference Image Fights AI Photos

Apple is introducing a new feature called Reference Image for its iPhone 18 Pro, designed to provide verifiable evidence of what the camera captured and combat the rise of AI-generated imagery. The opt-in feature works by capturing cryptographically signed sensor data when a photo is taken in Reference mode. This data is then processed by Apple Private Cloud Compute to create an unalterable reference image. Users can view this reference image alongside the main photograph within Apple's Photos app, functioning like a digital negative. This allows viewers to compare the two versions and determine if any edits have been made to the original capture. Apple states that the feature is intended for photojournalists, photographers, and everyday users concerned about the authenticity of digital images. While Reference Image authenticates the capture and editing history of a photograph, Apple emphasizes that it cannot prove whether a photographed scene was staged or if an attached caption is truthful. The feature provides evidence of what the sensor saw when the shutter was pressed, rather than proof of the depicted scene's reality or context.
