Apple Unveils 2nm A20 Pro Chip for New iPhones

Apple has unveiled its A20 Pro chip, marking a significant advancement as the company's first processor built on 2-nanometer technology. The new chip is set to power Apple's latest devices, including the iPhone 18 Pro lineup and the company's first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo. This transition to 2nm manufacturing represents a key step in Apple's silicon development, following its previous move to 3nm technology with the A17 Pro in 2023. The A20 Pro features a six-core central processing unit (CPU) with two performance cores designed to be up to 20 percent faster than the previous generation, which Apple describes as the fastest in any smartphone. It also includes four efficiency cores. The graphics processing unit (GPU) has been redesigned with seven cores, offering a claimed 40 percent increase in performance and enhanced memory bandwidth. Apple states that the chip's Neural Engine has been upgraded to 32 cores, delivering twice the computing performance of its predecessor and supporting 8-bit floating-point math for advanced on-device AI tasks. The company claims the A20 Pro is capable of running large language models directly on the device.
