Russian drones hit Kyiv school and disrupt bridge transport

Published 1 October 2026

A Russian drone struck a school in Kyiv on Thursday while children and staff were sheltering, and two other drones hit near the city’s Southern Bridge, disrupting metro and ground transport, according to Ukrainian officials. No casualties were immediately reported from the school strike. Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said people were inside shelters when the drone hit. The school building was damaged, with a hole in its brick frontage, burn marks and broken windows, according to accounts from the scene. One report said the drone’s warhead did not explode. The available accounts did not establish the full extent of damage or whether there were later casualties. The bridge strikes affected a route connecting Kyiv’s eastern and western banks. Separately, Ukraine’s nuclear safety watchdog said a drone hit the grounds of a nuclear research facility in Kyiv on Wednesday, causing a fire that was quickly extinguished. The regulator reported no injuries or damage to the test reactor, which it said had been shut down since 2022. The incidents came amid repeated Russian aerial attacks on Kyiv and a broader campaign involving drones and missiles.
