Netflix Developing Ravenloft D&D Series With Cuarón, August

Published 3 September 2026

Netflix is developing a live-action series based on the gothic horror setting of Dungeons & Dragons, titled Ravenloft, with writer John August and filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón attached to the project. The announcement, first reported by Deadline on September 3, 2026, confirms that the streaming service has shifted its focus from a previously announced D&D adaptation. The series will be written and executive produced by John August, known for his work on films such as Big Fish and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Alfonso Cuarón, the Oscar-winning director of Gravity and Roma, will serve as an executive producer. Additional executive producers include Gabriel Marano for Hasbro Entertainment, and Richard Schwartz and Gaby Rodriguez for Cuarón's production company, Esperanto Filmoj. According to the series logline, Ravenloft is described as a prestige fantasy series that combines adventure with gothic horror and tragic romance. The story will center on the origins of the vampire Darklord Strahd von Zarovich, charting his transformation from a tragic antihero into one of the franchise's most notorious villains.
