Athletic Finds Russini Violated Standards Over Vrabel Relationship

The Athletic has concluded that former senior NFL insider Dianna Russini violated the outlet's conflict-of-interest standards by failing to disclose her relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel. The findings, released on September 3, 2026, stem from a five-month internal investigation that began after Russini resigned in April. The investigation, led by Mike Semel, The Athletic's editorial director for standards and quality, reviewed 903 articles, 204 podcast episodes, and 77 videos from Russini's tenure, which ran from August 2023 to April 2026. Semel also interviewed approximately 14 staffers. The report determined that Russini's relationship with Vrabel was "in clear violation of The Athletic's standards," stating that "regardless of whether the relationship was romantic, it was a breach and should have been disclosed." The controversy began when Page Six published photographs on April 7, 2026, showing Russini and Vrabel together at a luxury resort in Sedona, Arizona. Both Russini and Vrabel, who are married to other people, denied any affair, claiming the photos lacked context and were from a group trip.
