Square Enix Releases Free Demo for Final Fantasy Resonance

Published 4 September 2026

Square Enix has released a free demo for Final Fantasy Resonance, a new role-playing game that marks the franchise's first foray into the HD2D art style. The demo became available on September 3, 2026, following a reveal during a State of Play presentation. The full game is scheduled for release on October 22, 2026, for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Final Fantasy Resonance is a reimagining of the story from the mobile game Final Fantasy Brave Exvius. The narrative follows Rain, a commander of an airship squadron, and his childhood friend Lasswell as they investigate a waning magical barrier at the Earth Shrine. Their mission is interrupted by a mysterious armored figure, Veritas of the Dark, who shatters the Earth Crystal. After suffering defeats and the loss of their comrades, Rain and Lasswell embark on a journey to protect the remaining crystals, joined by a mysterious girl named Fina. The game is described as the first HD2D title in the Final Fantasy series, a visual style pioneered by Square Enix in games like Octopath Traveler. This approach combines pixelated character sprites with modern lighting and environmental effects.
