McIlroy Criticizes LIV and Backs Return of Former Players
Rory McIlroy said LIV Golf had the makings of a good idea but was poorly executed, and that he would support allowing players who left for the breakaway league to return to the tours. His comments come as LIV seeks to emerge from Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and prepare a planned 2027 season, known as LIV 2.0. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in New Delhi, McIlroy said LIV had substantial capital but could have used it more strategically, including by partnering with golf’s governing bodies. He criticized spending that he said enriched professional players who were already earning significant sums. His assessment was his own view of the league’s strategy and prospects. McIlroy also said he would vote to welcome former LIV players back, arguing their return could benefit tour business. The question has become more pressing as players consider whether to join LIV’s planned new season or pursue membership elsewhere. The DP World Tour has said players who sign with LIV for 2027 will not be eligible for its membership. The rule presents players with a choice between the European circuit and LIV, rather than allowing them to play both.
