Giants Move J.J. McCarthy to No. 2 Quarterback Role

Published 7 October 2026

The New York Giants have moved J.J. McCarthy into the No. 2 quarterback role behind Jameis Winston for their Week 5 matchup with the Washington Commanders, while keeping Winston as the starter. The updated depth chart places McCarthy one step closer to playing, though the Giants have not said whether he will appear in the game. Jake Haener, who backed up Winston in the Giants’ Week 4 win over the Arizona Cardinals, has been sent to the practice squad, according to a report on the team’s latest depth chart. McCarthy was the No. 3 quarterback against Arizona and did not play. Coach John Harbaugh said before that game that McCarthy could become Winston’s backup, depending on how the week went. Harbaugh said the Week 4 game plan included some packages for McCarthy, but there was no point when the team considered putting him into the game. Winston played throughout the 36-24 victory, completing 18 of 29 passes for 250 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, according to reports of the game. The Giants have won both games Winston has started since taking over for the injured Jaxson Dart.
