Dungy Says NBC Wanted Younger Voices on Football Show

Published 8 October 2026

Tony Dungy said NBC told him it wanted to make Football Night in America younger and bring in new voices, describing the network’s explanation for his departure after 17 years. Asked whether his Christian faith was the deciding factor, Dungy said he did not know and that it did not matter to him. The reason for NBC’s decision beyond the explanation he recounted remains unclear. Dungy discussed the departure in a preview of an interview with Sage Steele. He said he had expected a change before NBC formally approached him and longtime colleague Rodney Harrison. According to Dungy, the network told them it wanted to get younger and reshape the show. He described the decision as difficult, while saying he had experienced career changes before. The faith question arose because Dungy has spoken publicly about his Christian beliefs and whether those comments affected NBC’s choice. In the interview preview, he said television networks may want broadcasters to be careful about certain subjects to appeal to a broad audience. He also said he would continue discussing his beliefs respectfully and would not hide his Christian identity or pro-life views.
