Delhi denies CJP protest permission as detentions reported
Delhi Police denied permission for the Cockroach Janata Party’s planned October 10 demonstration at Jantar Mantar, and a few protesters were detained near Janpath as authorities enforced extensive security and transport restrictions across the capital. The detention report was attributed to ANI. Police had instructed teams to detain people attempting to protest, regardless of where they gathered. The CJP, which had called for a demonstration demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, said it would proceed despite the denial of permission. The party and its founder, Abhijeet Dipke, said the protest sought changes to the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls and an independent process for selecting Election Commissioners. They cited alleged irregularities, including claims that eligible voters had been left off electoral rolls. Those claims are allegations and were not independently established in the reports. Authorities prepared a large deployment involving Delhi Police and paramilitary forces. Reports put the expected or deployed total at more than 20,000, with one account estimating about 25,000 and others reporting more than 35,000.
