AISA March Toward Jantar Mantar Stopped by Police

Published 4 October 2026

All India Students Association (AISA) protesters marched toward Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on October 4, the third day of demonstrations demanding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation. Police stopped the march at barricades, and several demonstrators were detained after brief clashes, according to reports from the protest site. The march began at Andhra Bhawan Circle on Ashoka Road. Police had denied permission for the gathering and deployed security personnel and barricades around the area. Protesters attempted to move toward Jantar Mantar, where police prevented them from crossing. Demonstrators were taken away in buses, and some protesters tried to stop the vehicles from leaving. The scale of detentions on Friday, during an earlier demonstration, remains unclear: reports gave differing estimates of more than 500 and more than 1,000 people. AISA said its president, Neha Bora, was detained and later released at Narela Industrial Area Police Station. The association alleged that she was taken in a vehicle it considered unauthorized and without a female constable, and that her phone and bag were not returned.
