Belfast boxer Ray Close dies aged 57

Published 2 October 2026

Belfast boxer Ray Close has died aged 57, according to reports published October 2, 2026. The reports do not identify who confirmed his death or specify when he died. Close was known for two world-title fights with Chris Eubank, including a 1993 draw that ended Eubank’s run of 35 professional wins without a defeat. Close challenged Eubank for the WBO super-middleweight title in Glasgow in May 1993. The bout ended level on the scorecards. In their 1994 rematch at Belfast’s King’s Hall, Close lost by split decision. Reports said the closely contested fights made him a prominent challenger during Eubank’s reign as champion. A third bout was planned but did not take place. The British Boxing Board of Control revoked Close’s licence after a brain scan revealed two lesions, according to the reports. Eubank went on to face Steve Collins instead. Close later obtained a licence in the United States and returned to the ring. Reports say he won five bouts before retiring in 1997. His professional record was 25 wins, three losses and one draw. He also won the European Boxing Union super-middleweight title in 1993.
