Athletic Investigation Finds Russini Violated Standards Over Vrabel Relationship

Dianna Russini, the former NFL insider for The Athletic, intends to return to sports media, according to a report published Thursday, the same day her former employer released the findings of a months-long investigation into her conduct. The investigation concluded that Russini violated the outlet's standards by failing to disclose her relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, though it found the vast majority of her reporting was not tainted by it. The Athletic's internal review, conducted by editorial director for standards and quality Mike Semel, examined 903 stories, 77 videos, and 204 podcasts featuring Russini, along with approximately 25 non-company appearances. Semel interviewed 14 individuals who worked with her but did not speak directly with Russini. The probe was launched after photographs published by Page Six on April 7, 2026, showed Russini and Vrabel holding hands and interacting at an Arizona resort. Subsequent images from other outlets showed the pair kissing in a New York bar and gambling at a Mississippi casino years earlier. Semel's report stated that Russini's relationship with Vrabel was "in clear violation of The Athletic's standards.
