Amazon Announces Refreshed Kindle Lineup and Accessories

Amazon announced a refreshed Kindle lineup on October 1, introducing redesigned versions of its basic Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft, along with Kids editions and new accessories. The models share a flush-front design, while configurations vary by screen, materials, storage and features. Amazon has not provided a consistent set of availability dates across the reports, particularly for Colorsoft models. The basic Kindle is available for purchase, while the Paperwhite and Colorsoft are being offered for preorder. Most reports place the Paperwhite and Colorsoft’s availability on October 28, but one says Colorsoft Signature Edition ships October 7. The conflicting dates may refer to different stages of ordering and delivery; the reports do not resolve the discrepancy. The new basic Kindle has a 6-inch screen and is offered in plastic or an aluminum-backed version. Amazon says page turns are 30 percent faster than on the previous model. The Paperwhite retains its 7-inch screen, waterproof design and adjustable warm light. Amazon says its battery lasts up to 12 weeks, compared with up to six weeks for the basic Kindle.
