Zverev beats Bublik to reach Shanghai quarterfinals

Published 13 October 2026

Alexander Zverev advanced to the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals on Tuesday, defeating Alexander Bublik in three sets after saying his ankle discomfort had returned during the match. The top-seeded German won 7-6, 4-6, 7-6 in the fourth-round contest, which required two tiebreaks. Bublik took the second set after breaking Zverev’s serve, but Zverev recovered in the deciding set and secured the win in another tiebreak. After the match, Zverev said in an on-court interview that his ankle was acting up again and that he was feeling the physical demands more as the contest continued. He described the match as difficult and said he was pleased to have advanced. The sources provide no independent medical assessment of his condition. Zverev also said at a press conference that the ankle began to worsen in the middle of the second set. He said he had felt discomfort during earlier matches in Shanghai against Wu Yibing and Quentin Halys. Those details, along with his account of how the problem developed, were reported as his statements; they do not establish a diagnosis or indicate how the issue may affect his next match.
