Sinner withdraws from Shanghai Masters with knee problem
Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Shanghai Masters as he continues to deal with a right-knee problem, extending his absence from competition since winning Wimbledon in July. The world No. 1 said on Instagram that he was sorry to miss the tournament and gave no date for his return. The Shanghai event is scheduled for October 7 to 18. Sinner, who won the title in 2024, had also pulled out of the China Open in Beijing and missed the North American hardcourt swing, including the US Open. His withdrawal means he will miss the Asian tournaments covered by those events. In his Instagram statement, Sinner said he had hoped to play in Shanghai and that he enjoys competing in front of its fans. He thanked supporters and said he looked forward to seeing them next year. He did not provide further details about the knee problem or say when he expected to resume playing. Reports attribute his extended absence to the right knee, but the precise diagnosis has not been confirmed in Sinner’s statement. One account attributed an ITB-syndrome diagnosis to Italian journalist Gabriele Parpiglia; the available information does not independently establish that diagnosis.
