UK minister says diesel supply is resilient amid US threat
Transport minister Keir Mather said the UK has diverse, resilient diesel supplies and urged the public not to worry about shortages, as President Donald Trump considers restricting US diesel exports and European countries discuss whether to release emergency fuel stocks. Mather said the government was working with US officials and European partners to maintain diesel flows. He also said the UK was discussing supply with European countries and through international forums. The talks concern the possible release of emergency reserves; no decision to release stocks or details of any allocation were reported. Trump said he was considering a restriction on US diesel exports. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent urged European countries to make additional supplies from their reserves available, citing disruptions to fuel markets. The US restriction remains a possibility rather than an adopted policy, and its scope and effect on UK-bound supplies are unclear. The concern comes as UK diesel prices reach record levels. RAC figures put the average at 199.79 pence per litre on Thursday, above the previous record of 199.09p set in June 2022.
