UK faces wetter, windier autumn as El Nino strengthens

The United Kingdom is forecast to experience a wetter and windier autumn than average, with the Met Office identifying a strengthening El Niño event as a key driver. The climate phenomenon, which involves warmer-than-average sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific, is already at near-record levels and is expected to peak in November or December as one of the strongest on record. The Met Office stated that the chances of a warm and wet meteorological autumn for the UK are around one-and-a-half to two times higher than normal. There is also an increased likelihood of windy conditions later in the season, particularly from November. This outlook aligns with historical patterns where El Niño events have been associated with warmer, wetter, and stormier conditions across the UK and northern Europe during late autumn and early winter. However, officials stressed that El Niño is only one of several climate drivers influencing the UK's weather. Met Office Chief Meteorologist Ian Lisk said the latest seasonal forecasts suggest an increased likelihood of wetter than average conditions, consistent with El Niño's historical influence.
