Tesla Launches Cybercab Without Steering Wheel in Austin

Tesla has officially launched its Cybercab, a purpose-built autonomous vehicle without a steering wheel or pedals, marking a significant step in the company's push to expand its robotaxi network. The launch event took place in Austin, Texas, on September 3, 2026, where the gold-colored, two-seat vehicles were showcased for limited public rides. The Cybercab is designed specifically for autonomous passenger transport, featuring a compact cabin with two seats, a central touchscreen for controls, and a rear trunk with 20.2 cubic feet of storage. Unlike Tesla's existing Model Y robotaxis, the Cybercab has no traditional driving controls, relying entirely on the company's autonomous driving technology. Tesla states that production of the Cybercab began in April 2026, with engineering test drives on public roads and employee rides at its Gigafactory Texas campus preceding the public launch. Rides in the Cybercab are currently available in limited areas of Austin, according to Tesla's support page. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles has authorized 45 Cybercab vehicles for driverless operations in the state.
