Amazon's Alexa for Shopping AI Detects Scam Messages
Amazon has launched an artificial intelligence feature within its Alexa for Shopping assistant that allows customers to verify whether a message claiming to be from the company is genuine or a scam. The tool, announced on September 2, 2026, enables users to ask the chatbot about suspicious emails, texts, or phone calls, and it will check the communication against Amazon's internal records to confirm its authenticity. The feature is designed to address a significant customer concern, with Amazon stating that over 360,000 customers contact its support department each year with questions about the legitimacy of messages. Scammers frequently impersonate Amazon through fake order confirmations, bogus Prime membership renewal alerts, account suspension warnings, package delivery notifications, and fraudulent job offers. These scams aim to extract personal data, login credentials, or payments from unsuspecting users. To use the new capability, customers can access the Alexa for Shopping chatbot through the Amazon mobile app or website and describe the message in natural language.
