Southgate says he does not envisage Premier League return

Published 15 October 2026

Gareth Southgate says he does not envisage returning to Premier League management, describing a changed relationship with football after leaving his role as England manager following the Euro 2024 final. Asked about managing in the division again during an interview on The Amol Rajan Connection, Southgate replied: “I don’t see a scenario where I do.” His answer describes his present outlook; it does not establish a binding decision about his future. Southgate said that towards the end of his nearly eight-year England tenure, victories stopped bringing lasting enjoyment. “By the end, I didn’t even enjoy the wins for any longer than a couple of minutes,” he said. He added that he had hardly watched football since leaving the job. He attended the FA Cup final to see Crystal Palace, his boyhood club, win, and said he had not been to a football ground since. Southgate said his desire to be involved in football had changed, though he did not detail any plans to return in another capacity. Instead, he said he had enjoyed the 18 months after leaving England, with experiences in media and leadership beyond the sport.
