Manchester City appeals Premier League financial-rule ruling

Published 2 October 2026

Manchester City said it filed an appeal on Thursday challenging an independent commission’s finding that the club breached Premier League financial rules. The appeal was lodged at 7 p.m. on October 1, ahead of a Friday deadline, leaving the findings unresolved while the review process proceeds. The club said the commission’s opinion contained material errors of law, principle and fact and maintained that it was innocent of the accusations. Manchester City said it would respect due process and could not comment further while proceedings remained ongoing. Its appeal challenges the commission’s ruling; the club’s position is an assertion, not a finding by the appeal board. The Premier League said an independent commission found the club guilty of serious breaches. The ruling followed a case concerning alleged violations over several seasons, including claims that the club misrepresented its finances and failed to cooperate with the league’s investigation. Reports differ on the scale and precise scope of the financial figures cited, so they do not establish a single agreed total.
