Shaw and Mainoo to miss United’s Atlético match
Manchester United manager Michael Carrick said Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo will miss the club’s Champions League match against Atlético Madrid after both picked up issues in Saturday’s draw with Tottenham Hotspur. Carrick said the players had not travelled with the squad and were unavailable for Tuesday’s match in Madrid. The update came at Carrick’s pre-match news conference on Monday, ahead of a meeting with Atlético in the Champions League. He said the club was still working through the players’ conditions, but did not specify diagnoses, the severity of either issue or when they might return. Shaw, a defender, and Mainoo, a midfielder, both started United’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham. Carrick said their issues arose during that game. Their absence removes two players from consideration for a fixture as United seek to end a run of four matches without a win since opening their Champions League campaign with a victory over Sabah. Carrick also said United were not short of players, despite having several absentees. Defender Matthijs de Ligt had returned to the squad, while Carrick said younger players would benefit from being involved in the preparations.
