JJ Gabriel’s Manchester United future remains uncertain

Published 3 October 2026

Manchester United have refused a request from 15-year-old academy player JJ Gabriel to cancel his registration, leaving his future with the club unresolved as he trains in Barcelona with a private coach. Reports say the forward could become eligible to move abroad after turning 16 on October 6, but no new club or transfer agreement has been confirmed. Gabriel has not trained at United’s Carrington base since seeking to leave, according to an account repeated in several reports. He has instead worked in Castelldefels with private coach Jack Hunter and specialist coaches. The location and training arrangement were first reported by one outlet and subsequently repeated, rather than independently confirmed by multiple observations. United have not given up on keeping him. Manager Michael Carrick said the club needed to be careful about the exposure and scrutiny placed on a young player and that the situation would work itself out. Reports also say club officials are seeking a resolution with Gabriel and his representatives, though the accounts do not establish whether discussions have progressed or what terms might be under consideration.
