Shane Gillis Swears During Live SNL Sketch
Shane Gillis accidentally let an uncensored profanity slip during a live Saturday Night Live sketch on October 10, then continued the scene as castmate Mikey Day turned the mistake into a joke. Gillis also apologized at the end of the episode, according to a report quoting his closing remarks. The moment came during a Dr. Seuss-inspired version of Green Eggs and Ham. Gillis played an overprotective son defending his father, portrayed by Day, from Sam-I-Am, played by Andrew Dismukes. As Gillis insisted his father did not want the meal, he began to say a profanity, stopped himself and said, “Jeez.” He briefly broke character before returning to the scene. Day later incorporated the slip into the sketch, telling Gillis’s character he was being sent out of the house for saying a bad word. Gillis acknowledged the line and played along, allowing the scene to continue. Accounts describe audience reactions that included gasps, laughter and groans, rather than a uniformly stunned response. At the close of the show, Gillis thanked the audience and musical guest Rosalía, then said, “And sorry about earlier,” according to the report of his remarks.
