Russian Attack Hits Kyiv Power Plant, Killing Three in Capital

Published 13 October 2026

Russia launched a large overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions on October 14, damaging energy infrastructure and killing at least six people across Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said three people were killed and 22 injured in the capital. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine received no advance warning from Western partners before a ballistic missile struck the Kyiv power plant CHP4. Zelensky said Russia fired 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 drones. Ukraine’s Air Force said air defences downed four of the missiles. The strikes hit energy and other critical infrastructure in Kyiv, the surrounding region and Kharkiv, Zelensky said. He reported damage to 26 power facilities and four oil and gas sites, and said about 600,000 people were without power. The Russian Defence Ministry said its forces struck seven Ukrainian energy facilities and a data centre in Kyiv. It described the sites as supporting Ukrainian military activity. The ministry’s account of the targets was not independently confirmed in the reports. In Kyiv, the missile hit CHP4, according to Zelensky.
