Ronaldo's Portugal future uncertain amid disciplinary case

Published 15 October 2026

Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Portugal’s national team remains uncertain as disciplinary proceedings continue over his departure from camp, while his sister Elma Aveiro says a reconciliation with coach Jorge Jesus appears unlikely. Aveiro made the assessment at a book launch in Lisbon on Wednesday, saying a return was “more likely a no than a yes.” She said the situation had stalled and that both Ronaldo and Jesus were hurt, while stressing she was speaking for her brother rather than announcing his decision. The Portuguese Football Federation said proceedings were initiated by a decision dated October 9 over events reported on October 7. The case was referred to the federation’s Disciplinary Investigation Committee on October 10. The investigation remains confidential until it concludes, according to the federation statement reported in connection with the case. No final disciplinary outcome or suspension has been announced in the supplied reports. The dispute followed Portugal’s 2-1 Nations League win over Norway, during which Ronaldo remained on the bench after warming up.
