Hojlund Honors Ronaldo as Portugal Beats Denmark 4-2

Published 2 October 2026

Denmark striker Rasmus Hojlund celebrated his goal against Portugal with Cristiano Ronaldo’s trademark “Siu” gesture, describing it as a tribute to the forward he calls his idol. Portugal won the Nations League match 4-2 in Copenhagen on Thursday, with Ronaldo absent after leaving the national team camp earlier in the week. Hojlund scored Denmark’s second goal, bringing the score to 2-2, before Portugal added two goals in the final 25 minutes. After the match, he said he wanted to honor Ronaldo and that the forward would not be forgotten. Hojlund has previously explained that Ronaldo’s career inspired him and that the gesture was not intended to mock him. Ronaldo, 41, said in a 2025 interview that he did not consider Hojlund’s use of the celebration disrespectful. He said he understood it as admiration, noting that athletes around the world use the gesture. The two players had also been on opposite sides in a 2025 meeting between Denmark and Portugal, when Hojlund celebrated a goal in the same way.
