Ronaldo and Jesus dispute Portugal camp departure
Cristiano Ronaldo says a dispute with Portugal coach Jorge Jesus over his unused substitute appearance against Norway led him to leave the national team camp before the Denmark match. Jesus has offered a different account of the playing-time discussion and has declined to comment further on Ronaldo’s statement. The disagreement arose during Portugal’s October Nations League camp. Ronaldo said Jesus told him he would play about 30 minutes against Norway. He warmed up from halftime but was not sent onto the field, which Ronaldo described as a broken promise. Portugal won the match 2-1. Jesus said Ronaldo could play for 20 or 30 minutes if the match required it, but that the decision depended on how the game developed. He said he changed his mind during the match and acknowledged that Ronaldo should have begun warming up later. The two accounts differ over whether the coach had promised Ronaldo a specific amount of playing time. Ronaldo also said a later meeting produced an eight-point document setting out how Jesus would explain the incident publicly before the Denmark match.
