Ceferin to seek fourth term as UEFA president

Published 8 October 2026

Aleksander Ceferin told UEFA delegates in Berlin on October 8 that he will seek a fourth term as president, reversing his earlier decision to leave the post in 2027. The announcement sets up a bid to remain at the head of European football’s governing body for another four years, through 2031 if he wins. UEFA’s next presidential election is scheduled for April 22, 2027, at the organization’s congress in Astana, Kazakhstan. Ceferin’s announcement states his intention to run; the election outcome has not yet been determined. Ceferin said he had accepted the national associations’ request that he reconsider his decision. UEFA said its 55 member associations had unanimously asked him to stand again. The association’s statement is the reported basis for that account of the request. Ceferin, first elected in 2016, had previously said he would not seek another term after UEFA changed its presidential-term rules in 2024. Those changes made another bid possible. The Football Association opposed the amendments, according to one account. The Berlin meeting also addressed FIFA’s governance and leadership.
