David Silva agrees to return with Hong Kong club Sha Tin

Published 9 October 2026

David Silva has agreed to return to professional football with Hong Kong Premier League club Sha Tin, three years after retiring following a serious knee injury, according to a report published October 7. The 40-year-old former Manchester City and Spain midfielder is expected to join the squad, but the club says he must build match fitness before making his debut. Silva retired in 2023 after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury during preseason training with Real Sociedad. His reported agreement with Sha Tin would bring him back to competitive football after an absence of about three years. The report does not confirm that he has arrived in Hong Kong or begun training. Sha Tin said Silva would first settle in, link up with the squad and work toward peak match fitness. The club did not confirm a debut date. His potential availability for Sha Tin’s scheduled match against Hong Kong Football Club on October 18 depends on his fitness and how quickly he adjusts to training. Silva said in a video posted to Instagram that he was excited to visit Hong Kong, experience local culture and return to football.
