Fernandes urges unity as Ronaldo’s Portugal future remains unclear

Published 3 October 2026

Bruno Fernandes urged Portugal to remain united over Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure from the national-team camp, saying he had spoken with the forward and that Ronaldo remained a defining figure for the country. The remarks came as coach Jorge Jesus said the team would focus on its match against Norway before discussing Ronaldo’s situation. Fernandes spoke at a press conference on Saturday, October 3, ahead of Portugal’s scheduled Norway match on Sunday. He said Ronaldo’s standing would endure regardless of what happened next, pointing to his contributions to Portuguese football and his wider profile. Fernandes also asked the public not to take sides and said the players were focused on their work. The midfielder said the squad was not involved in the controversy. He described the team as united and said players spent time together away from television coverage. Fernandes called for the matter to be handled privately and said he hoped it would be resolved in a way acceptable to both sides. His comments did not indicate that an agreement had been reached. Ronaldo left the camp before Portugal’s 4-2 win over Denmark, in which he did not play.
